Central Synagogue is a vibrant Reform congregation located in Midtown Manhattan. Founded over 150 years ago, we are a diverse community of Jews from all walks of life, united by our shared values of inclusivity, compassion, and a commitment to Jewish tradition and innovation.

Our History and Legacy
Central Synagogue has a rich history as Congregation Ahawath Chesed Shaar Hashomayim. For over a century, we have played a significant role in American Jewish life. Our former location on West 55th Street, known colloquially as Central, was a beloved institution for generations of Jewish New Yorkers.
Park Avenue Synagogue
In 1960, Central merged with Park Avenue Synagogue, a prominent Reform congregation known for its scholarship and innovation. This merger created a new entity that combined the rich traditions of both congregations. Today, we continue to honor our heritage while embracing new ideas and approaches to Jewish life.
